As Democrats decided to change tracks and replace their presidential nominee (and rightfully so), Republicans kept fueling some of their most intense criticism of Vice President and presidential nominee Kamala Harris.
They repeatedly linked her to an administration they say has led to multiple increases in crime and inflation. They also cast her as an enabler of an aging and ineffective president. They also blamed her for record levels of migrant crossings at the border.
However, no phrase has been heard more than this one: “border czar.” As Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida mentioned, “she isn’t able to do any job. She was appointed border czar. Appointing Kamala to oversee the border is similar to appointing Bernie Madoff to oversee your retirement plan.”
Ms. Harris wasn’t, in fact, appointed border czar, nor did she receive any task to address the broader issues that plague the border itself, especially the ones where minors have slept on the floors of overcrowded facilities for days beyond the legal limit. As a matter of fact, she was deputized by President Biden with another diplomatic mission.
She had to solve the “root causes” of migration from countries such as Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, and deal with the issues that made people flee in the first place, such as dr*g violence and lack of economic opportunity.
It was also the same politically unsavory task the former president Barak Obama appointed Mr. Biden to deal with when he was a vice president. Moreover, it’s a task that has become increasingly harder as time went by, and definitely more politically polarized.
Now, it’s probably one of the thorniest issues in the Biden-Harris administration. Brian Fallon, the campaign spokesman for Ms. Harris, declared that former President Donald J. Trump and his party have “resorted to lying about the VP’s records”, especially after former President Trump tanked a bipartisan border deal in the beginning of this year.
There’s one thing we can all agree with attacking Kamala Harris serves plenty of functions, according to both Republican and Democratic strategists. One of them is definitely related to the fact that no one wants to miss the opportunity to lay out the case that the latest Democratic administration has been a complete disaster. Needless to say, the calls of “border czar” continue.
“A dangerous liberal”
Naturally, no one expects Republicans to be thrilled about the sudden, not-so-sudden change that occurred in the Democratic party. Nevertheless, the hate seems to be of ginormous proportions, and we can’t help but wonder if behind all this name-calling and conspiracy theories lies, in fact, a ton of fear.
Only recently, Republicans took the stage to criticize her once again, calling the Democratic presidential nominee a “dangerous liberal”. In a few appearances across CNN and Fox News, senior and well-known Republican figures Tom Cotton, Lindsey Graham, and the former presidential candidate Ron DeSantis attempted to paint Harris, mainly seen as a centrist Democrat, as having far-left politics.
Those remarks came right after Trump sought to insult Harris at one of his rallies. The ex-president seemed to have deliberately mispronounced Harris’s first name, claiming she is by far “the most incompetent, unpopular and far-left vice-president in American history.” He also stated that she was basically just a “bum” a couple of weeks before.
Another US Senator from Arkansas explained how during Trump’s presidency, things were good. Then, he went on to say that after president Joe Biden took the White House in 2020 with Harris as his running mate, “everything went to hell.”
Now, I know what you might be thinking. How is this any news? Well, this time he went on to explain that if she gets elected, things are about to get way worse. “Just look at her record. She wants to ban private health insurance, fossil fuel production, and guns.”
Well, like any other thing said by some Republicans who seem to have a PhD in fabricating something new out of half-truths and half-statements, the story goes like this: In 2019, Harris did propose a universal healthcare plan while she ran for the presidency.
However, the plan didn’t propose eliminating private health insurance. Moreover, Harris didn’t say that she wants to ban fossil fuel production. On top of that, it is also untrue that Harris wants to ban all guns, even if she did state that high-capacity rifles, used in plenty of US mass shootings, should definitely be banned.
As a closing argument, the senator went on to reiterate that Kamala is, in fact, a dangerous liberal, and that compared to current president Joe Biden, she makes him look way more competent and moderate.
For one reason or another, Republicans try to portray her as someone who would radically change the course America is currently on, but sadly and disappointingly.
Republicans also believe that she is by far the most liberal senator in our country. In fact, they don’t think there is any other liberal hose that she hasn’t tried to ride yet. Firstly, she sponsored the Green New Deal and Medicare, and even if her nice persona is something none of us can ever doubt, they can’t help but color her in major-league liberal hues.
Other military hawks also feel the need to point out how Harris attempts to do a carbon copy of Biden’s policies in the Middle East. They explained that as far as Iran is concerned, Biden and Harris represented colossal failures in terms of controlling the Ayatollah.
They believe that because the Democrats have enriched him, Israel is now paying the price. Some even think that Iran could easily “sprint to a nuclear weapon” in the four months leading up to the US election.
But then again, this is the opinion of people who truly believe in the potential of someone like JD Vance. They repeatedly tried to defend JD’s various statements, especially the ones where he targeted many American women and called them “childless cat ladies.” As far as they’re concerned, marginalizing JD and trying to make him some kind of person won’t work. They truly believe he is a good person.
DeSantis’ take on Kamala
Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor who at one point was fiercely locked in a battle with Trump as the pair running for Republican presidential nomination, thinks that “the entrenched corporate media” will definitely try to “rewrite history” about Harris.
“They will do their best to present her as something she’s simply not,” DeSantis explained to Fox News. He also went on to explain how she owns the majority of policies, and how she won’t be able to distance herself from them, and most Americans believe that this country will definitely march in the wrong direction.
And since we are talking about DeSantis, we already expect a strong closing of arguments. He conceded that Republicans would have preferred running against Trump. “You take somebody like Harris, (…) but Biden makes her look like Socrates because we’re used to him not doing anything.”
As no one expected Republicans to feel “joyful” for the change of course in the Democratic party, we definitely didn’t expect this type of flooding of arguments and conspiracies.
