Sam Houston
Sam Houston was a prominent lawyer, politician, and soldier. He served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas. However, he filed for bankruptcy in 1862, after he registered a huge amount of financial losses, caused by his own speculations over land. Even if he had to deal with serious financial difficulties, he still served in political positions and remained a strong advocate for Texas’s annexation to the United States.
Thomas Paine
Thomas Paine was an important political philosopher, writer, and also revolutionary, especially since he had such a significant role in the American Revolution. But it seems that the Gods of wealth weren’t exactly with him, since he filed for bankruptcy in 1802.
He registered a huge amount of financial loss, after getting involved in a failed iron bridge project. Even if he had to deal with financial difficulties, Paine kept on writing and publishing political works, that heavily influenced American and European politics.
