Georgia Prosecutor to Appeal Dismissal of Some Trump Election Case Charges

  • Trump’s first trial is slowly but surely turning into a battleground.

Georgia prosecutors on Thursday declared they would appeal a judge’s ruling dismissing some criminal counts in the 2020 election subversion case against Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and many of his allies.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, the prosecutor overseeing the case, declared that a state appeals court’s decision to take up Trump’s attempt to disqualify her office from the case draws the attention of the court to focus on other rulings.

The lawsuit is one of four criminal prosecutions Trump is currently facing, as he seeks to unseat Democratic President Joe Biden in the November 5 election rematch. Willis also pointed out that she would ask the appeals court to overturn Judge Scott McAfee’s March ruling, eliminating six other counts, including three against Trump, that accused defendants of soliciting Georgia officials to violate their oaths of office. McAfee also stated the indictment wasn’t detailed enough to sustain those charges, but still left the remainder of the lawsuit intact.

The Georgia appeals court has started to consider a bid by Trump and eight other defendants to completely disqualify Willis’ office from prosecuting the case, arguing that her romantic relationship with a former top deputy represented a conflict of interest.

Trump and 14 co-defendants also pleaded not guilty to racketeering and other charges stemming from what prosecutors believed was a scheme to overturn Trump’s narrow defeat in Georgia back in 2020. Four others initially charged in the case also pleaded guilty in deals with prosecutors.
