Arthur Miller was an even bigger prize.
Plenty of documents were not even focused on Marilyn Monroe but more on Arthur Miller, the famous Yankee playwright who wrote 1954’s The Crucible, a beautiful allegory for McCarthyism.
Moreover, the FBI’s interest in Monroe started right after she entered a relationship with Miller, back in 1955. As soon as they started dating each other, they started following her.
Being married to Arthur Miller was seen by the FBI as an act of proto-communism. There’s a document that dates all the way back to June 13, 1956, where it describes how Miller attended a Communist Party seminar for writers back in 1946.
Well, the same document mentioned a report from the communist Daily Worker newspaper, showing that at some point, Miller issued a rather “angry retort” to the NYC Youth Board for bowing to a “red-baiting attack”, ignoring his script for an upcoming film about juvenile delinquency in NYC.
