Marilyn Monroe was more than just a bombshell that the entire nation adored. She was more than just a “ditzy blonde” with a tumultuous love life, and I think that now the entire world knows that.
In the last couple of years, the Marilyn Monroe subject has resurfaced, probably due to an increasing focus on feminist perspectives and past mistakes that our society has made towards famous women.
You’ll probably be shocked to find out that for 10 years, she had strong communist ties, hence strong political opinions. As it turns out, the FBI consistently kept tabs on her and her whereabouts, thanks to all the secret informants and press reports that were sent to FBI agents.
It’s worth noting that she lived in the era of McCarthyism. The Soviet Union was rapidly expanding into Eastern Europe, worsening Cold War tensions between the United States and the USSR.
Anyone who was slightly suspected of harboring communist ideas was extremely vulnerable to falling under the FBI’s watch. By the early 1960s, it was very clear that Monroe wasn’t working with the Communist Party of the USA. But that wasn’t enough for the FBI to stop investigating her.
In 2012, as a response to a FOIA request by the Associated Press, the federal government decided to release the FBI papers on Marilyn Monroe.
As it turns out, timestamps on the documents were initiated around 1955, which is the same year she started dating the suspected communist and playwright Arthur Miller.
Ironically enough, the FBI’s obsessive fascination with Marilyn Monroe, her location, her relationship, and especially her political affiliation, wasn’t presented in Netflix’s recent film “Blonde”, even if documents confirm that the government spared no resources in tracking the icon around North America.
