2024 is a big year for America because we will elect our next president. The scene is still dominated by the same two men who made 2020 their year: former President Donald J. Trump and President Joe Biden. But who are the other presidential candidates?
There was no shortage of people eager to become the next president of the United States, and we want to tell you more about them. You already know everything about Trump and Biden, but what about the rest?

What you should know about the 2024 US election
The person who will sit in the White House’s Oval Office will have an immense influence over the lives of people both abroad and at home, and this is why the outcome should be important for everyone.
Over the years, the political landscape of the United States has been dominated by just two parties, and this is why most presidents of the modern era were part of one party or the other.
We have the liberal party, the Democrats, and their agenda is based on pushing for civil rights, addressing climate change, and promoting a social safety net that should protect everyone. Joe Biden, the incumbent President, who is now trying to secure a second term, is in this party.
Among the opposition, we have the conservative political party, the Republicans. Also known as the Grand Old Party (GOP), they stand for lower taxes and protection of gun ownership rights; their agenda also has stricter rules about abortion and immigration regulations.
Of all the Republican candidates, the former US president, Donald Trump, is the only one who is still in the race.
So, who are the other three presidential candidates all Americans should know more about? Let’s meet them!
Marianne Williamson
She was born on July 8, 1952, in Houston, Texas, and is known for being a bestselling author, spiritual leader, and political activist. Marianne Williamson gained notoriety after she appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” where she was Oprah’s spiritual adviser.
In 2020, she ran for the Democratic nomination but dropped out in January 2020 because the campaign was unsuccessful. This year, in 2024, on February 7, her campaign was suspended for a while, but later on, after three weeks, she was back on track.
Williamson is the first Democrat to publicly launch her candidacy, despite signs that the president might run for reelection.
One of the main points of her campaign is the “gun violence epidemic.” She considers that the sale of semi-automatic weapons and assault rifles should be banned, as should the 3-D printing of firearms.
Also, Williamson wants the country to be powered only by renewable energy, reducing CO2 emissions by 2035. Climate change is a big part of her campaign, and she advocates green energy.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
He is part of one of the most famous political families, as he is the nephew of President John F. Kennedy. He initially announced that he would run for president as a Democrat, only to later reveal to his supporters in October 2023 that he would continue the campaign as an independent.
People know him because of his stance against vaccines and also because he used to be an environmental lawyer who advocated access to clean water and was also a bestselling author.
More than 15 years ago, he became one of the leading voices that promoted the anti-vaccine movement, and since then, public health experts have considered this attitude to be dangerous and misleading.
Later on, the COVID-19 pandemic intensified his beliefs, and in 2021, he managed to release a book called “The Real Anthony Fauci.” This book talks about how Anthony Fauci, the renowned infectious disease doctor, tries to destroy world democracy by promoting unproven COVID-19 treatments such as hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin.
As you would expect, one of his campaign positions is about the health of our children. He believes that it is possible to reduce the level of chronic disease and promotes the idea that vaccines cause autism.
Another big point of Kennedy’s campaign is freedom of speech. He supports the idea that the liberties of Americans regarding freedom of speech have been under assault for more than 20 years, and he wants to change this.
Cornel West
West is the second independent candidate, and he is a progressive activist and professor. He was initially part of the Green Party but later announced that he would run independently.
Cornel West was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 2, 1953. In 1980, he got his doctoral degree and started to teach religion, philosophy, and African American studies at various universities and colleges, including Harvard and Princeton.
West believes that if you want to change something and make democracy what it is supposed to be—the freedom to make choices without being judged—you need to focus on people and not on the dynamics inside the political party.
He also wants the whole healthcare system, including the pharmaceutical industry, to be nationalized. Even more, he believes that abortion should be a constitutional right.
Cornel West is also an advocate of the four-day workweek and thinks that paid family leave should be a minimum of six months that is fully paid.
What are the biggest issues in this election?
Immigration
Right now, Biden is using some of the immigration rules and regulations from the Trump era in order to deter migrants while at the same time trying to adopt new policies that can open more pathways for those who want to come into the country legally and then work.
Moreover, Biden has slowed down deportations and arrests of longtime immigrants and instead focused on deporting criminals.
On the other hand, Trump is still one of the biggest opponents of immigrant rights, and this will continue to create this conflict between Democrats and Republicans. This has split the country in two, and the results of these elections will show us what is coming next.
Foreign Policy
The Israel-Gaza war is a true challenge for President Biden, as he has to find the balance and please both the people from his party and Israel supporters, as well as the left and the younger generation who support the Palestinians.
Furthermore, Biden is also leading a global coalition that supports Ukraine, but funding is delayed by the Republicans, who use it as leverage for their immigration policies, and some of them believe that stopping supporting Kyiv altogether is the best decision.
Climate
Climate change is happening right now, and it is easy to see this considering all the hurricanes and severe floods.
If we look at the statistics, we can see that 70% of Americans, of which 50% are Republicans, want action to be taken related to this matter. Unfortunately, the Republican politicians don’t use this in their campaigns, and Trump even believes that human activity has caused climate change and even opposes the initiatives for clean energy.
