“The Apprentice”, Iran-born director Ali Abbasi’s drama about the young Donald Trump’s career as a New York real estate mogul premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this week. What’s really interesting about this film is its timing, especially since Trump, now 77, is expecting to win another term as a U.S. president in November.
The film took the title of the well-known reality show that helped Trump become a household name.
Sebastian Stan, who became famous after starring in the Captain America trilogy as the Winter Soldier, morphs into Trump. The story presents Trump’s life from his early stages as an upstart working for his father’s business all the way to a brazen, self-centered tycoon.
Abbasi is well-known for his eclectic film repertoire, including 2022’s Cannes entry “Holy Spider” about the killings of s*x workers in Iran, and “Border”, a beautiful fantasy love story that takes place in Sweden.
As for the film, critics had mixed opinions, praising Stan and Strong while seeing the film’s basis in the actual events as a limitation.
